Denver Outdoor Skating

Denver has many places to skate and warranted it's own page! Everything listed here has been reccomended by skaters.

  • Washington Park
    (link opens in new window)
Washington park in Denver has a smooth roadway through and around the park. The road is closed to vehicles in most places. The distance around the road is 2.2 miles (near the center line). This makes a great place to train for a marathon, 12 laps = 26.4 miles.

  • South Platte River Trail
    submitted by Larry Tudor
We like going from REI/Confluence Park to the Mineral St light rail station and returning on the "C" line to Elitches/Pepsi Center. That way it is slightly uphill for a better workout. If you are biking you need a free permit:
    http://www.rtd-denver.com/LightRail/BikePermit/index.html
Skates are not allowed in the terminals so bring along a pair of flip flops or pack your shoes. The cost of the light rail from Mineral to Denver is under 2.00.
I would avoid parking in the main trailheads as these are notorious targets for theives.

Perhaps the longest trail in the Metro Denver Area. There are numerous trail heads to begin and end your journey. The trail currently extends from Chatfield Reservoir on the south end to 104th Ave. near I-76 on the North end. The trail is mostly smooth concrete. Most prefer to skate up river to start out and then make the return down river. Highlights along the path include Confluence Park (REI's Denver Flagship Store), Six Flags Elitch Gardens, the Pepsi Center, Hudson Gardens. The trail goes through Adams, Denver, Arapahoe and Douglas Counties.

    Map

  • Bear Creek Trail
The trail takes off of the Platte River Trail just South of Hampden Ave. (south of the drive in theater) and heads west. This trail eventually joins the C-470 Trail just west of Bear Creek reservoir

  • Cherry Creek Trail
Beginning at the confluence of the South Platte and the Cherry Creek rivers(15th and Platte River Drive), this trail follows the river through the lower downtown.

    More Information

  • Clear Creek Trail
Beginning at the confluence of the South Platte River (near I 76 and 70th Ave.) the trail extends nearly into Golden.

  • Clement Park
Loacted near Bowles Ave and South Wadsworth, (near Southwest Plaza) this park offers a great lake to skate around. The trail is wide and smoth concrete and circles the lake. The trail around the lake is approx 1.4 miles. The rest of the park is also great to explore when you get bored going in circles.

  • Cottonwood Trail
(extension of the Cherry Creek Trail)
The Cottonwood trailhead is located about 1/2 mile east of Parker Road and Cottonwood Ave. (just north of E-470). This trail extends south through Parker and goes as far as Scott road. The trail is less crowded that other metro trails. It runs through pastures and one has to close cattle gates as you move down the trail. This is one of the smoothes trails in town. The plan is for this trail to eventually extend south to the entrance of Castlewood Canyon.

  • C-470 Trail
This trail follows C-470 from Parker Road and extends all the way to 6th avenue on the far west side near I-70.

  • Rocky Mountain Park
This is a small park in north Denver located just south of I-70 between Lowell Blvd. and Federal Blvd. The park trail leads around the lake. The loop is approximately 1.2 miles. The asphalt is rough at last visit and not very enjoyable to skate to many laps. (7/21/2002)

  • Ralston Creek Trail
The trail takes off from Clear creek near Sheridan Blvd and I-76 and heads north west through Arvada until it tops out near highway 93. Map

  • North End of the South Platte
From 74th Ave. to 104 Ave. (approx. 5.3 miles one way) This portion of the trail is seldom used. The trail is in excellent condition and has one grade level street crossing at Monaco St. The grade is smooth and very little total grade change from one end to the other. There is little scenery (unless you count the goat farm) winds along the river. The trail stops about 100 yards short of 104th. Access is best from 74th, 88th or 96th Ave.
